Yanka Rupkina played a major role in the growing popularity of Balkan music in the 1980s. Together with Stoyanka Boneva and Eva Georgieva, Rupkina formed the Trio Bulgarka, a vocal group affiliated with La Mystere Des Voix Bulgares. In addition to recording their own albums, Rupkina and Trio Bulgarka provided vocal harmonies for Kate Bush's albums, The Sensual World and The Red Shoes. Rupkina subsequently performed as a solist for the national television and radio Bulgaria group, the Balkana. This year she will be back with a new album released in October 2005. Cesaria Evora, (d.27 Ağustos 1941-Cape Verde) Grammy ödüllü folk şarkıcısı.
Atlas Okyanusunda, Kuzey Batı Afrika açıklarındaki bir adalar ülkesi olan Cape Verde'de doğdu. Doğduğu yer Afrika'da sömürgeleri bulunan Portekiz'in yüzyıllarca üs olarak kullandığı bir yerdi. Cesaria Evora, parlak sesi ve fiziksel çekiciliği hemen dikkat çekti, ancak bir genç kızken başladığı şarkıcılık yaşantısında umduklarını bulamadı. Barlarda şarkı söyleyerek annesine ve iki kızına baktı.
Onu dinlemek için Sao Vicente adasına gelen Fransız menajer Jose da Silva, birlikte çalışmayı önerdiğinde Evora 47 yaşındaydı. Evora "Hiç değilse Paris'i görürüm" diyerek öneriyi kabul etti. Kendi deyimiyle "aç insanlarla, dünyanın fakir halklarıyla dayanışma içinde olmak amacıyla" sahneye gösterişli ayakkabılar yerine çıplak ayakla çıkmayı tercih eden Cesaria Evora’nın ilk albümü Ö1988’de yayımlandı. 1991 ve 1992’de yeni albümleri çıktığında artık 50’li yaşlarda ve hayatında ilk kez ünlüydü. Şarkılarını Portekizce ile Afrika dillerinin bir karması olan Creole dilinde söylemesine rağmen, sesinin sıcaklığı ile dünyanın her köşesinde geniş bir hayran kitlesi budu.
Sonraki yıllarda Dünya’yı dolaşıp aralarında Türkiye’nin de bulunduğu ülkelerde yüzlerce konser veren Evora, pek çok ödül aldı. 2003 yılında Güncel Dünya Müziği kategorisinde “Aşkın Sesi (Voz d'amor)” adlı albümüyle aldığı Grammy ödülü bunlardan biridir. Çıplak ayaklı diva olarak anılan sanatçı için bu ödüllerin belki en anlamlısı ülkesi tarafından verilen “Kültür Elçisi” unvanıdır. Sanatçı, hayat verdiği hüzünlü şarkılarla (morna) tanınıyor. Cesária Évora lost her father at the age of seven. After his death, Cesária's mother struggled to support her on meager earnings as a cook, eventually entrusting Cesária to the care of an orphanage. It was in the orphanage choir that Cesária first learned to sing.
At 16, Cesária met a Cape Verdean sailor named Eduardo who taught her the traditional Cape Verdean styles of music of coladeras and mornas. The mornas (which may be derived from the word mourn) are songs of sadness, sorrow and yearning. She began singing in local bars and hotels. With the help of local musicians, she would hone her skills and would later be proclaimed "Queen of Mornas" by her fans. She became famous in Cape Verde, but remained relatively unknown internationally.
Cesária had an uncle who was a well-known musician and songwriter who used the name B. Leza (a pun on 'belleza' = 'beauty'). Many of Cesária's loveliest songs on the first several albums are his.
In 1975, Cape Verde gained independence but its new leader Amilcar Cabral was assassinated during the turmoil that accompanied the end of five centuries of Portuguese rule. Évora was still popular at the time but her fame did not lead to financial success. Frustrated by personal and financial problems, compounded by the very difficult economic and political situation in Cape Verde, Évora gave up singing to support her family. She didn't perform for 10 years, which she describes as her "dark years." During this time she struggled with alcoholism.
Cesária resumed performing after being encouraged by a Cape Verdean exile, leading musician and patron of the arts, Bana, who lived in Portugal. He secured invitations to Portugal where she performed a series of concerts sponsored by a local women's organization.
A Frenchman of Cape Verdian descent named Jose Da Silva persuaded her to go to Paris where she recorded a new album, La diva aux pieds nus (The Barefoot Diva) in 1988. This album won critical acclaim and began for her a dramatic comeback that accelerated with her 1992 album, Miss Perfumado. She became an international star at the age of 47. (Wikipedia)

Udi Hrant Kenkulian (1901–August 29, 1978), often referred to as Udi Hrant ("oud-player Hrant") or as Hrant Emre ("Hrant of the soul") was an oud player of Turkish classical music, and a key transitional figure in its transformation into a contemporary popular music. He was an ethnic Armenian citizen of Turkey who spent most of his life in Turkey and wrote most of his lyrics in Turkish. He went to the United States of America to have his blindness treated, and performed while in America.
As an oud player, he was a major innovator, introducing left-hand pizzicato, bidirectional picking (the tradition had been to use the pick only on the downstroke), double stops, and novel tunings (sometimes using open tunings or tuning the paired strings in octaves instead of to a single note). The musical traditions of the Arabic world are fused with jazz improvisation and European classical techniques by Lebanese-born oud player and composer Rabih Abou-Khalil. The CMJ New Music Report noted that Abou-Khalil has "consistently sought to create common ground between the Arab music mileau of his roots and the more global musical world of today." Down Beat praised Abou-Khalil's music as "a unique hybrid that successfully spans the world of traditional Arabic music and jazz." Although he learned to play the oud, a fretless, Lebanese lute, as a youngster, Abou-Khalil temporarily switched to the classical flute, which he studied at the Academy of Music after moving to Munich, Germany, during the Lebanese Civil War in 1978. In an attempt to explore new ways to play Arabic music, he returned to the oud and began to incorporate techniques more often played on jazz guitar. In the early-'90s, Abou-Khalil was commissioned by Southwest German radio to write two pieces that were debuted in a performance with the Kronos String Quartet at the Stuttgart Jazz Summit in 1992, and recorded with the Belanescu Quartet four years later. Abou-Khalil has worked with a mixture of Arabic, Indian, and American jazz musicians, including alto saxophonist Sonny Fortune, frame drummer and percussionist Glen Valez, conga player Milton Cardona, harmonica ace Howard Levy, and bassists Glen Moore and Steve Swallow. ~ Craig Harris, All Music
