The musical traditions of the Arabic world are fused with jazz improvisation and European classical techniques by Lebanese-born oud player and composer Rabih Abou-Khalil. The CMJ New Music Report noted that Abou-Khalil has "consistently sought to create common ground between the Arab music mileau of his roots and the more global musical world of today." Down Beat praised Abou-Khalil's music as "a unique hybrid that successfully spans the world of traditional Arabic music and jazz." Although he learned to play the oud, a fretless, Lebanese lute, as a youngster, Abou-Khalil temporarily switched to the classical flute, which he studied at the Academy of Music after moving to Munich, Germany, during the Lebanese Civil War in 1978. In an attempt to explore new ways to play Arabic music, he returned to the oud and began to incorporate techniques more often played on jazz guitar. In the early-'90s, Abou-Khalil was commissioned by Southwest German radio to write two pieces that were debuted in a performance with the Kronos String Quartet at the Stuttgart Jazz Summit in 1992, and recorded with the Belanescu Quartet four years later. Abou-Khalil has worked with a mixture of Arabic, Indian, and American jazz musicians, including alto saxophonist Sonny Fortune, frame drummer and percussionist Glen Valez, conga player Milton Cardona, harmonica ace Howard Levy, and bassists Glen Moore and Steve Swallow. ~ Craig Harris, All Music

Cezayir doğumlu Idir, Fransa'da yaşıyor. Fransızca ve halen Cezayir'in bazı kesimlerinde ve Kuzey Afrika'nın bazı kabileleri arasında konuşulan Berberi dilinde şarkılar söylüyor. Benim favorim, Karen Matheson ile düet yaptığı "A Vava Inouva ". Berberi dilinde " Küçük Adamım " anlamına geliyor.

About Idir

" Idir was born in Aït Lahcène, a Berber village in Haute-Kabylia. This farmer's son started studying Geology and was destined for a career in the petroleum industry before his rise to stardom. Idir has been the ambassador of the Kabyle culture, especially the Kabyle music, with only his vocals and acoustic guitar. Idir has always used his status to claim his Berber (Amazigh) identity. His first album "A Vava inouva" came out in 1976, and the song "A Vava inouva" was translated into seven languages. After notable success, Idir wrote and recorded his second album "Ay Arrac Negh" (to our children) in 1979.
Idir restarted his career again with the release of a compilation in 1991 of seventeen songs from his first two albums "A Vava inouva" and "Ay Arrac Negh".
In 1993, a new album "les Chasseurs de lumières" (the hunters of lights) appeared on the Blue Silver label. "Les Chasseurs de lumières" is about (his) predilection, love, freedom and exile (which he had known since he moved to the Paris region in 1975). The acoustic guitar gives to the songs of this album a touch of modernism. We can also hear the voice of the Breton singer Alan Stivell in the duo "Isaltiyen".


Idir, man of conviction has often participated in many concerts supporting different causes. For example, on June 22nd 1995 more than 6,000 people came to applaud the singer and his friend Khaled, initiators of the association "l'Algérie la vie" (Algeria my life), at a concert for peace, freedom and tolerance. Idir also took part in the concert in memory of Matoub Lounes, the Kabyle singer who was assassinated in 1998.

Idir restarted his career once again with "Identities" in 1999, a tribute album which joined numerous artists together from Manu Chao to Dan Ar Braz without forgetting Maxime Le Forestier or Scotswoman Karen Matheson for a "A vava inouva 2", but also Gnawa Diffusion, Zebda, Gilles Servat, Geoffrey Oryema and the Orchestre National de Barbès.
Idir defended his national identity once again at "Le Zénith" in Paris in the spring of 2001 at the "21st berber's spring", a celebration of Berber culture. And on July 8th, he organised a special fund-raising concert to support the population in Kabylia when anti-government riots rocked the cradle of Berber culture in the summer of 2001. Idir was joined by a number of stars and thousands of Algerian and French fans who turned out to "Le Zénith" to support the population in Kabylia. "

Sima Bina
Born in Khorasan, in the heart of a popular tradition, Sima Bina started her career on Iranian radio at the age of nine, under the direction of her father, Ahmad Bina – a master of Iranian classical music and poet who wrote many of her early songs. She studied the repertoire of learned music “radif” and singing technique with great masters such as Maaroufi and Zarrin Panjeh. She went on to acquire her own solo programme, Golhaye Sahraii (Flowers of the Desert), presenting a collection of folk songs and music from various regions of Iran, which is still remembered today.After graduating from Tehran University in 1969, majoring in Fine Arts, Sima Bina contniued and perfected her knowledge of radif with the highly subtle teaching of great Master Davami.Since 1979, along with teaching Iranian classical music and vocality to selected students, Sima Bina has focused on doing further research on Persian folk songs, collecting, recording, writing and re-interpreting popular regional music, especially from Khorasan, her native land. By travelling to most remote places all over Khorasan, Sima has been able to gather and revive a collection of almost forgotten songs and melodies. She has thus gained a unique position in the history of Persian music.Since 1993, Sima Bina has been invited to present her collection of Persian folk songs in festivals all over the world, including ´97 Världen I Norden in Norway, ´99 WDR Weltmusik Festival in Bonn/Germany, and the forthcoming Raza Festival on Khorasan Music in the Netherlands. Furthermore she was invited to perform on “emociona!!! Mujer” in Spain in 2001, then also in Cologne/Germany on the “World Music Night” and also on a Festival in Antwerpen/Netherlands in the “Culturen Centrum”. And many many more.Due to her devotion and dedication to the Iranian folk music, Sima Bina can now see the materialization of thirty years of meticulous work by making her music known worldwide.

Annemin anısına...

Televizyonun siyah beyaz ve tek kanallı olduğu dönemlerde tanıştım Fairouz ve Ümmü Gülsüm ile... Güneyde oturmanın verdiği avantaj ile Arap televizyonlarını izlerdik annemle... Her ne kadar dillerini bilmesek de, müziğin evrenselliği yakınlaştırırdı bizi onların dünyasına. Saatlerce süren konserlerini büyük bir hayranlıkla izlerdi annem... Özellikle Türkçe'ye uyarlanmış şarkılar söylediği zaman heyecanlanırdım ben. Sözler farklıydı ama müzik bizimdi( ! ) . Çocuk aklımla, bizim şarkılarımızı Arapça'ya uyarlamışlar sanır ve mutlu olurdum. Aslında bunun tam tersi olduğunu öğrendiğimde artık büyümüştüm...

Fairouz, duru güzelliği, yumuşak, hüzünlü ama güçlü sesiyle hayran bırakırdı bizi kendisine...

Asıl adı Nouhad Haddad olan Fairouz( Firuze ), Mardin doğumlu Süryani baba Wadi Haddad ve Lübnanlı anne Liza Alboustani'nin kızları. Doğumu 21 Kasım 1935.
Arap müziğinin Ümmü Gülsüm'den sonra en güçlü sesi kabul ediliyor Fairouz. Şarkı yazarı ve kompozitör olan Rahbani Kardeşler ile tanıştıktan sonra geleneksel Arap müziğini batı formlarıyla yeniden düzenleyerek, adını Arap dünyasının dışında da duyurmaya başlamış ve evrensel bir ses haline gelmiş.
Lübnan ve Beyrut'a olan aşkı ile biliniyor. Lübnan iç savaşı sırasında çok zor günler geçiriyor. Hatta bu savaşa tepki olarak yüzünün hiç gülmediği söylenir.
