Julien Jacob arrives in France in his early childhood. His West-Indians parents settled in the south of France. For him, who was born in Benin, Africa, it was the encounter with a new culture. But he will retain the imprint of African chants and rhythms from his native country.

Passionate about music from his early childhood, Jazz, black american Motown music, mystical oriental chants but also seventies pop-rock all are grains which will unite to enrich his artistic talent.

At the age of 17, he performed on stage for the first time as lead singer in a rock band. After a few years he decided to go his own way and left the group in 1983. From then on , he concentrated on composing his own music. But during this period, he often frequent backstage at the concerts of world renowned artists like David Bowie, Miles Davis...Backstage, he had intense artistic encounters, in particular a fabulous evening with Fela Kuti.

Inspiration pushes him to sing in a mysterious language which he find within himself. An unknown language which everybody can understand because the words only find their meaning in the emotions they carry. And he addresses himself to the heart, to everybody’s space of intimate peace. At the same time, he started writing books. He has forever followed an internal quest. Music and writing are, for him, two different ways to express hi own perception of life.

His second album "Cotonou" (Wrasse Records) was released in 2005. An album that is very highly regarded by the international press. He gets back on the road again and performs on many stages in Europe and France.

Billie Holiday (born Eleanora Fagan; April 7, 1915 – July 17, 1959) was an American jazz singer and songwriter.

Nicknamed Lady Day by her sometime collaborator Lester Young, Holiday was a seminal influence on jazz, and pop singing. Her vocal style — strongly inspired by instrumentalists — pioneered a new way of manipulating wording and tempo, and also popularized a more personal and intimate approach to singing. Critic John Bush wrote that she "changed the art of American pop vocals forever." She co-wrote only a few songs, but several of them have become jazz standards, notably "God Bless the Child," "Don't Explain," and "Lady Sings the Blues."

Corciolli is a Brazilian musician. He was born in the city of Sao Paulo, and begun his musical studies at 13. Besides the organ and classic piano classes, he developed a deep interest for electronic synthesizers and their wide range of sound possibilities. Two years later, he formed his first band, where he performed his compositions and arrangements.
In 1986, working as a musician, he went to the architecture and urbanism college, graduating in 1990. During these years, he played with Celso Pixinga and with the band Espírito Cigano, and composed the pieces that would be part of his first CD All That Binds Us. With this album, he established the Azul Music record company, in 1993.

In the following years, he produced albums attached to the magazines Planeta, PlanetaNovaEra, IstoÉ, Áudio News, MotorShow and Inside. In 1995, he released the CD Unio Mystica, a musical suite in seven movements that presented alchemical texts in Latin, Gregorian Chants and orchestral arrangements. This album brought him international projection, being blessed by Pope John Paul II and released in several countries.

In 1996, he was invited by the Tibetan Monks of Gaden Shartse to perform at the Latin America Memorial, in São Paulo. Afterwards, he recorded the album The New Moon of East, an unedited meeting between the Tibetan sacred music and the work of a Western musician. In 2000, he released the Tudoazul collection: ten CDs inspired in the main alternative therapies and ancestral systems of knowledge. The collection became a best seller, being widely recognized and consolidating Azul Music as a reference in the phonographic market.

With albums released all over the world, featuring in international collections side by side with Vangelis, Yossou N´Dour, Dead Can Dance and Sarah Brightman, Corciolli’s music is inspired and unique. His work is revealed in the rich subtlety of details which unite the traditional to the contemporary; the acoustic to the electronic. To Corciolli, music must not be imposed by limits, rules or styles. It’s got to move, and to charm, by its own.

Ali Ibrahim “Farka” Touré (October 31, 1939March 6, 2006) was a Malian singer and guitarist, and one of the African continent’s most internationally renowned musicians. His music is widely regarded as representing a point of intersection of traditional Malian music and its North American cousin, the blues. The belief that the latter is historically derived from the former is reflected in Martin Scorsese’s often quoted characterization of Touré’s tradition as constituting "the DNA of the blues". Touré was ranked number 76 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time."

For more information http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ali_Farka_Toure

Munir Bashir (Arabic: منير بشير‎, Syriac: ܡܘܢܝܪ ܒܫܝܪ) (1930 – September 28,1997) was one of the most famous musicians in the Middle East during the 20th century and was considered to be the supreme master of the Arab maqamat scale system.
He created different styles of the Arabian short scaled lute, the oud. He was one of the first Arabian instrumentalists known to Europe and America. Bashir’s music is distinguished by a novel style of improvisation that reflects his study of Indian and European tonal art in addition to oriental forms.

Despite not being an ethnic Arab, Munir played a big role in Arab culture throughout the 20th century. Born in Iraq, he had to deal with numerous disruptions of violent coup attempts and multiple wars that the country went through. He would eventually exile to Europe and become noticeble first in eastern nations such as Hungary and Bulgaria.

Omar Bashir was born in 1970 in Budapest, Hungary. He started playing the oud at 5, next to his father, Munir Bashir, the Iraqi virtuoso who first made the oud a solo recital instrument and popularized it in the West. At 7, Omar Bashir joined the Baghdad Music and Ballet School. He would eventually become a teacher there and set up his own band of 24 musicians specializing in traditional Iraqi music. They performed regularly across Egypt, Russia, Turkey and many Arabic countries. Bashir returned to Budapest in 1991 where he joined the Franz Liszt Academy.

Bashir has performed as a solo artist and in duets with his father until Munir Bashir died in 1997 on the eve of a tour of North America. His music mixes traditional Arabic music with a jazz-like improvisation that has earned him comparisons to John MacLaughlin and Al Di Meola.

Víctor Lidio Jara Martínez (September 28, 1932September 15, 1973) was a Chilean teacher, theatre director, poet, singer-songwriter, and political activist. A distinguished theatre director, he devoted himself to the development of Chilean theatre, directing a broad array of works from locally produced Chilean plays, to the classics of the world stage, to the experimental work of Ann Jellicoe. Simultaneously he developed in the field of music and played a pivotal role among neo-folkloric artists who established the Nueva Canción Chilena (New Chilean Song) movement which led to a revolution in the popular music of his country under the Salvador Allende government.

Shortly after the U.S. backed September 11, 1973 Chilean coup he was arrested, tortured and ultimately machine gunned to death - his body was later thrown out into the street of a shanty town in Santiago. The contrast between the themes of his songs, on love, peace and social justice and the brutal way in which he was murdered transformed Jara into a symbol of struggle for human rights and justice across Latin America.

(Vikipedi )

Cesária Évora lost her father at the age of seven. After his death, Cesária's mother struggled to support her on meager earnings as a cook, eventually entrusting Cesária to the care of an orphanage. It was in the orphanage choir that Cesária first learned to sing.
At 16, Cesária met a Cape Verdean sailor named Eduardo who taught her the traditional Cape Verdean styles of music of coladeras and mornas. The mornas (which may be derived from the word mourn) are songs of sadness, sorrow and yearning. She began singing in local bars and hotels. With the help of local musicians, she would hone her skills and would later be proclaimed "Queen of Mornas" by her fans. She became famous in Cape Verde, but remained relatively unknown internationally.
Cesária had an uncle who was a well-known musician and songwriter who used the name B. Leza (a pun on 'belleza' = 'beauty'). Many of Cesária's loveliest songs on the first several albums are his.
In 1975, Cape Verde gained independence but its new leader
Amilcar Cabral was assassinated during the turmoil that accompanied the end of five centuries of Portuguese rule. Évora was still popular at the time but her fame did not lead to financial success. Frustrated by personal and financial problems, compounded by the very difficult economic and political situation in Cape Verde, Évora gave up singing to support her family. She didn't perform for 10 years, which she describes as her "dark years." During this time she struggled with alcoholism.
Cesária resumed performing after being encouraged by a Cape Verdean exile, leading musician and patron of the arts, Bana, who lived in
Portugal. He secured invitations to Portugal where she performed a series of concerts sponsored by a local women's organization.
A Frenchman of Cape Verdian descent named Jose Da Silva persuaded her to go to
Paris where she recorded a new album, La diva aux pieds nus (The Barefoot Diva) in 1988. This album won critical acclaim and began for her a dramatic comeback that accelerated with her 1992 album, Miss Perfumado. She became an international star at the age of 47. (Wikipedia)
